You have opened up, the shutter is halfway rolled, and there it is across the window. Pale, cloudy, the shape of a tag, and it will not come off. By ten o'clock you have tried everything and you are looking at a frontage that says nobody is looking after this place.

A point worth knowing about the older frontages on Kingsland High Street and Dalston Lane: many are not standard sizes. What Kind Of Damage Have You Actually Got?
Three different things look alike at arm's length, and knowing which you have saves you a wasted call.
Paint or marker. Solid colour, crisp edge, and your fingernail rides up over it. It is sitting on the glass. The right solvent takes it off.
Acid etching. Pale, clouded, and you can still see through it in a hazy way. Your fingernail finds a slight grittiness, but flush with the surface rather than raised. The outline bleeds where the gel crept before somebody wiped at it. Stand inside with the lights on and it will be twice as obvious as from the pavement.
Scratching. Thin, bright, deliberate lines cut with a blade, a key or a stone, and your fingernail drops into them.

Before You Touch It
The first hour either costs you nothing or turns one pane into a whole frontage.
Anything wet on the glass is a chemical. Etching gel burns skin and eyes. Keep it away from staff and customers and do not let anyone go at it barehanded.
Put the blade down. Scraping cuts permanent lines into glass that was going to come back fine. Wiping at wet residue carries it onto clean panes and grows the job.
Leave the graffiti remover on the shelf. It does nothing against etching and adds an unknown chemical to the situation.
If there is visible residue and it is safe, flood it with cold water. Gloves, eye protection, pouring rather than rubbing.
Take photographs straight away, dated, from the pavement and from inside. If you end up talking to a landlord or an insurer they will ask, and a clear photo usually lets us price the work without coming out first.

How The Restoration Works
Working out what the glass is. Float, toughened, laminated, coated, mirrored, or a sealed double glazed unit. On Kingsland High Street we see everything from original single glazing to units fitted last year, and the approach changes with each.
Reading the depth, then a trial patch. We measure how far the acid has gone and prove the method on a small out of sight section before taking on the whole pane.
Masking and containment. Frames, seals, gaskets, vinyl lettering and signage all protected. Slurry kept contained and off a pavement that is busy from early morning.
Working through the grades. A sequence of progressively finer abrasives lifts a layer thinner than a hair, tapering out well past the tag so there is no line where the work stops. That is the tell of a general contractor taking on glass work they should not be touching, and once it is there it is a bigger problem than the graffiti was.
Cerium oxide to finish. Clarity comes back under wet cerium oxide, judged by looking through the pane at the light rather than at what bounces off it.
Checked from both sides. From the pavement, from inside, and at a low angle in daylight, because that is how your customers will see it.

All of it gets dealt with in the same visit. Paint lifts with the correct solvent, etching and scratching both respond to the abrasion and polishing sequence. How deep the damage goes decides the outcome, and the occasional very deep gouge sits beyond recovery.
What about the mirrors and the steel inside my place?
Etching gel damages any polished face, so back bar mirrors, marble thresholds and steel fittings are all affected and all recoverable. One visit covers the lot.
How much is it?
Against a replacement, counting the pane, the fitting and the trade you lose while boarded, restoration comes in up to 90 per cent cheaper. It has been there for months and I gave up on it. Too late?
Almost never. Fresh damage is quicker and cheaper to bring back than something that has sat through a winter of rain and grit, but old etching is still nearly always recoverable. It simply takes longer on the day.
Will it happen again?
On a street this busy after dark, quite possibly. That is what sacrificial film is for. The next attack damages the film rather than the pane, and replacing the film costs a fraction of another restoration. We can fit it in the same visit.
Does the film change how my window looks?
