A clouded patch has appeared in a display window and nothing will lift it. It looks as though one section of the pane has been frosted deliberately. The Window Team's Calendar Decides When We Work
Knightsbridge is unusual in that a great deal of its glazing belongs to very few occupiers. Continuous frontages wrap entire blocks, and behind them sit in-house estates teams and visual merchandising teams working to a schedule that has nothing to do with shop opening hours.
Those windows are installed and changed overnight. That is when the display comes out, the bay is empty, the lighting is off and there is access from inside. It is also, for exactly the same reasons, the only sensible time to restore the glass.
So the first question we ask on a frontage like this is not when the store closes. It is when the window team is next in that bay.
Working alongside an installation is efficient for everybody. The bay is already stripped, the interior access already arranged, and the restoration happens while the display is out rather than requiring a second disruption weeks later.
Working against the calendar wastes a window. Restoring a pane the night before a display goes in, then having the merchandising team discover the finish under their own lighting, is the wrong order. We would rather wait a few days and do it properly alongside the change.

A department store or luxury display bay is lit deliberately and aggressively. Raking light across the pane, bright interior illumination behind it, and a viewer standing a metre away with nothing else to look at. That combination reveals imperfections that would be entirely invisible on an ordinary shop window in daylight.
Two consequences follow, and we build the job around both.
A dished patch will be seen. If a restoration is confined to the tag, the resulting shallow lens in the pane distorts the display behind it, and under raking light that distortion is unmistakable. The worked area has to be carried well beyond the mark and faded out so there is no boundary anywhere on the pane.
The acceptance test is the display lighting, not daylight. We sign a bay off with the window lit as it will be for customers, viewed from where a customer stands, not from the pavement at two in the afternoon. On a continuous run every treated pane is also checked against its untreated neighbours under the same lighting, because a frontage of this kind has to read as one uninterrupted surface.
If a contractor has not asked about the lighting, they are going to sign off a job that looks acceptable at the time and unacceptable the following evening.

So identification comes before pricing, always. What the glass is, what it carries, and where the damage sits in relation to it. That assessment goes to you in writing, including the cases where the honest answer is that a particular pane needs replacing rather than restoring.

Which Of The Three Is On The Pane
Three kinds of damage look alike from a distance and each takes a different route.
Paint or marker rests above the surface. Dense colour, a defined boundary, and a fingernail steps up where it starts. Solvent removes it and the pane beneath is unaffected.
Acid etching has gone into the surface. It reads as a washed out haze that light still passes through, and the roughness sits flush with the rest of the pane rather than proud of it. The edge tails off wherever the gel ran before anyone got to it. Put display lighting behind it and it leaps out in a way it never does by day, which is why security and window teams find it first.
Scratching is mechanical. Fine luminous lines scored by a blade, a stone or a key, into which a fingernail drops and stays.

What The Team On Duty Should Do
Anything still wet on the pane is an active chemical. Etching gel injures skin and eyes. Nobody handles it, and on a public frontage the bay should be kept clear until it has been dealt with rather than simply flagged to staff.
Nothing sharp, nothing abrasive. A scraper leaves permanent scoring in glass that would have recovered fully, and on a display pane that scoring will be lit from behind every evening.
No proprietary removers. They have nothing to act on, and on low iron, anti-reflective or coated glazing an unknown chemical adds a second problem to the first.
Visible residue should be flooded off with cold water where that can be done safely, in gloves and eye protection, and allowed to drain away rather than wiped across the glass.
Photograph every affected bay, dated, from outside and from within, and take one shot with the display lighting on. That lit image is the one that shows the true extent, and it is what lets us price the whole run without an additional survey visit.

The Method, Bay By Bay
Specification first. Is the pane low iron, plain float, toughened, laminated, coated, anti-reflective, mirrored or a sealed unit, does it carry film and on which side, and how deep has the acid reached. Nothing else starts until those answers are in.
A concealed trial area. The method is proved on a small section sited out of the customer sightline before the full pane is committed to.
Protection and containment. Frames, gaskets, seals, manifestation, applied film, vinyl and signage are masked, and the interior of the bay is protected. Slurry is contained and kept clear of the display floor and the pavement.
Graded abrasion. Successive stages, each finer than the last, lift a depth of glass no eye could measure, with the worked zone carried well beyond the mark so it fades out entirely. On a pane that will be raking-lit every evening this is the stage that decides whether the job is acceptable.
Cerium oxide finishing. Remaining haze is polished out wet with cerium oxide, judged with the light travelling through the pane rather than reflecting from it.
Signed off under the display lighting. With the bay lit as it will be for customers, viewed from where a customer stands, and compared against the untreated bays either side so the run reads as one surface.

Where restoration is not the right answer you hear it at the assessment.
