An Estate Strung Along A Road Has No Perimeter
Upper Holloway holds a kind of institutional estate that behaves quite differently from the ones elsewhere in London. Rather than a campus behind a boundary, the buildings are strung out along the main road and the streets off it, interleaved with shops, flats and ordinary commercial premises.

Three Kinds Of Damage
They look much alike from the pavement and each needs a different answer.
Paint or marker sits on top of the pane. Solid colour, a hard boundary, and a fingernail rides up where it begins. The right solvent lifts it and the glass underneath is fine.
Acid etching is in the pane. Milky and pale while light still comes through, with a faint chalkiness flush with the surface rather than standing on it. The mark has no sharp edge, because the gel went on creeping until something stopped it. With the lights on inside it is far more obvious than from the street.
Scratching has been physically cut. Sharp bright channels left by a blade, a stone or a key, which catch a fingernail as it passes.

The First Hour
Wet residue is still a live chemical. The gel damages skin and eyes, so keep everyone away from it, and where there are flats overhead let the residents or the agent know instead of assuming somebody else will.
No blades and no scouring pads. A scraper leaves permanent lines in a pane that would have come back cleanly, and wiping wet gel carries it onto glass that was untouched. This matters more here than in most places, because scratching on top of etching pushes the job from affordable towards not.
Graffiti removers do nothing here. They are made to break down a coating and no coating exists, while painted joinery can be harmed by them into the bargain.
Cold water and plenty of it where residue is visible and it is safe, gloved and with eye protection, letting it run off rather than rubbing it in.
Photograph it straight away, dated, from outside and inside. If you are part of a larger organisation with other buildings nearby, ask whether anything turned up at those on the same night.

How The Restoration Is Done
Identifying the glass. Old or modern, plain float, toughened, laminated, coated, mirrored or a sealed unit, and how far the acid has travelled. Along a parade that varies from one unit to the next.
Depth reading, then a trial patch. The method is proved on a small area nobody looks at before the whole pane is taken on.
Masking and containment. Beads, putty lines, paintwork, frames, shutter guides, vinyl lettering and signage are protected, and the slurry stays inside the working area and off the pavement.
Down through the abrasive grades. Each stage finer than the last, removing a thickness of glass the eye cannot register, and running the treated area well beyond the mark so it disappears rather than stopping at a line. Restrict it to the tag and a shallow lens is left sunk into the pane, bending whatever sits behind it, and in a shop window full of stock that is the first thing anybody notices.
Cerium oxide to finish. Whatever cloudiness survives the abrasion is taken out wet with cerium oxide, judged with the light coming through the pane towards us.
Checked from both sides. From the pavement, from inside against the interior lighting, and at a low angle, because along a parade people see your glass obliquely well before they see it square on.

Where restoration will not work we say so at the assessment, and on this road we say it early. There are only three disqualifiers: acid that has burned exceptionally far down, a unit whose seal was already gone, and a coating lying across the surface we would have to work. Neither. Nothing leaves the frame at any point, so the frontage stays whole and you keep trading.
Why won't you start at six in the morning?
Because there are people asleep directly above you. The work itself is quiet, but an early start outside a parade with flats over it is a complaint waiting to happen. Mid morning suits everybody.

Will the repair be visible?
It should not be. The work runs well past the damage and fades away, so no edge is left. A poor finish comes from treating the tag alone, which sinks a shallow lens into the pane and warps what is behind it.
