On Bond Street the window is not a window. It is the most expensive piece of marketing the business owns, it was specified by an architect, and in many cases it was manufactured to order in Europe and shipped in one piece. When something is etched into it overnight, the conversation is not about maintenance. It is about how quickly the frontage can be made perfect again without anybody seeing the repair happen.
That milky, semi-opaque mark across the display glass is acid etched graffiti. It is not paint and it is not a smear. The acid has eaten into the surface of the pane, which is why the cleaning team could do nothing with it and why a solvent will not touch it.
We restore it in place, discreetly, usually overnight or before opening, at a small fraction of the cost of the replacement pane and without the lead time that replacement would mean on this street.

Why Replacement Is The Wrong Answer On Bond Street
Everywhere else in London, replacing a damaged pane is expensive and slow. On New and Old Bond Street it can be close to impossible inside any sensible timeframe, and this is the single most important thing to understand before anyone quotes you for new glass.
The glass is not ordinary glass. Flagship glazing here is typically low iron, sometimes described as ultra clear or extra white, because standard float glass carries a green cast that distorts the colour of what is behind it. Much of it is oversized. Some of it is curved. A great deal of it carries an anti-reflective coating so that passers by see the display rather than their own reflection.
Lead times are measured in months. A bespoke oversized low iron unit is not a stock item. It is surveyed, manufactured to order, frequently on the continent, then shipped, then installed with specialist access and often a road closure. Nobody on this street can afford to have a hoarding up for that long.
Matching is its own problem. Replace one pane in a run and you have a new unit sitting next to panes that have weathered for years. On an anti-reflective or low iron elevation the difference is visible from the opposite pavement.
Security glazing cannot simply be swapped. Jewellers, watch retailers and galleries here use laminated attack resistant glazing to a specified rating. That specification is tied into the insurance position, and it is not something to improvise around.
Restoration removes the damage from the pane that is already installed. Nothing is ordered, nothing is shipped, nothing is altered, and the elevation stays as the architect specified it.

The Coating Question, Which Decides Everything
Restoration works by removing a layer far thinner than a human hair from the face of the glass. If that face carries a functional coating, and on Bond Street it very often does, polishing through it does not repair anything. It destroys the coating and leaves a panel with different reflectivity and different colour rendering from everything around it. On an anti-reflective flagship window that is dramatically more obvious than the etching ever was.
So the first thing we do here is not clean. It is identify. Low iron, coated, laminated, toughened, curved, sealed unit, security rated, and critically which surface any coating sits on relative to the damage. That determines whether the pane restores fully, restores with limits, or genuinely does need replacing despite everything above.
We give you that answer in writing before anybody starts work. If the honest answer is replacement, you hear it from us at assessment rather than discovering it halfway through a job.
Discretion Is Part Of The Service
This is the part most contractors never think about and every flagship manager cares about.
No liveried van parked outside your frontage during trading hours. No work in view of customers. No barriers, cones and wet floor signs across a luxury entrance at two in the afternoon. We attend overnight, or in the early morning before the street wakes up, or at whatever hour your operations team specifies, and by the time the doors open there is nothing to see except clean glass.

Where We Get Called Out Around Bond Street
New Bond Street. The flagship run, and the frontages with the largest and most expensive glazing in the area. Damage here is escalated to brand level within the hour.
Old Bond Street and the Piccadilly end. Jewellery, watches and art, which means security glazing, higher stakes and a lower tolerance for any visible repair.
Conduit Street, Bruton Street and Grafton Street. Flagship and showroom frontages on the connecting streets, quieter at night and considerably less overlooked than Bond Street itself.
Clifford Street, Savile Row and Dering Street. Tailoring, galleries and smaller units, often in listed buildings with traditional shopfronts and modern glazing fitted into historic openings.
Brook Street and Hanover Square. Offices, private members' premises and showrooms, with the ground floor glazing that takes the exposure.
The Oxford Street and Bond Street station approaches. The heaviest pedestrian flow feeding into the area, and the point where the luxury run meets general West End footfall.
Listed Buildings And The Conservation Area
Much of Mayfair sits within a conservation area and a significant number of buildings along Bond Street and its side streets are listed. That matters more than it first appears.
Where a building carries a listing, changing the shopfront or its glazing can require consent from the local authority, and proceeding without it is a criminal matter rather than an administrative one. Protection frequently extends to the surround and the opening even when the glass in them is modern, and conservation area shopfront policy in this part of Westminster is not accommodating.
Restoration does not alter the building. We remove damage from the existing glass and leave the fabric exactly as it was, so the consent question does not arise. For estate managers and landlords holding listed Mayfair stock, that is frequently the deciding factor rather than a footnote.

Restore Or Replace: What It Actually Costs You
| Replacing the pane | Restoring the pane | |
|---|---|---|
| Lead time | Weeks to months for bespoke low iron or curved glass | Same day in most cases |
| Frontage during the wait | Hoarded or vinyl covered | Trading and on display |
| Match to adjacent panes | New glass beside weathered glass | Original pane retained |
| Security rating | Specification must be replicated exactly | Existing unit and its rating stay in place |
| Listed building consent | May be required | Not required, nothing is altered |
| Access and disruption | Crew, lift, possible road closure | Worked in situ, out of hours |
| Typical cost | Full cost of a bespoke unit and its installation | Up to 90 per cent less |
The comparison is set out in full in glass replacement vs protection: the true cost, and the decision itself in should I replace or restore etched graffiti glass.
Telling Etching From Scratching From Paint
Three different problems, three different answers, and on a flagship frontage the wrong first move is expensive.
Paint or marker sits on top. A fingernail meets a raised edge, the colour is solid, and the outline is crisp. This lifts with the right solvent and correct technique.
Acid etching is in the glass. Cloudy, pale, and you can see straight through it in a diffuse sort of way. A fingernail finds a faint roughness at the same level as the surrounding surface. The edges tend to bleed where the gel crept before it was cleaned off. It is at its most visible from inside a lit interior, which is why the front of house team usually spots it first.
Scratching is mechanical. Fine bright lines cut with a blade or a stone, and a fingernail drops into the groove.
Our side by side photographic guide is at glass scratching vs acid etching, and the pale frosted look specifically at white frosty window graffiti.
Found At Opening. The First Hour
Handled correctly the first hour costs you nothing. Handled badly it turns a single pane into a whole elevation.
Anything still wet on the glass is a chemical, not a mess. Etching gel is corrosive to skin and eyes. Keep staff away from it and do not let a cleaning contractor attack it unprotected.
Nothing abrasive, nothing sharp. A blade puts permanent scratches into a pane that was going to be recoverable. A cloth spreads live residue across clean glass and enlarges the damage.
No proprietary graffiti removers. They achieve nothing against etching, and on coated flagship glazing an unknown chemical is a second risk on top of the first.
Flood it with cold water if residue is visible and it is safe, gloved and with eye protection, pouring rather than wiping.
Photograph it straight away, dated, from the pavement and from inside. Brand teams, insurers and landlords will all ask, and a clear photograph usually lets us price the work before we attend.
Report it. Criminal damage is reportable and a crime reference is normally needed for a claim. Further detail is in what to do when your shop window is vandalised.
How The Restoration Is Carried Out
Identification. What the glass is, what it is coated with, whether it is laminated or security rated, and which face the damage sits on. Nothing begins until this is settled.
Discreet test area. A small section worked first, chosen where it cannot be seen from the shop floor, and assessed before the full pane is committed to.
Masking and containment. Frames, finishes, gaskets, seals, signage, vinyl and manifestation all protected. Slurry contained and kept off the pavement and the threshold. On a luxury frontage the cleanliness of the working area is part of the job.
Progressive abrasion. Successively finer stages lift a minutely thin layer from the glass, tapered across a zone far wider than the mark itself so no boundary is left for the eye to find. Concentrating only on the lettering produces a shallow depression that bends reflections, and on a flat flagship window that failure is unmissable.
Cerium oxide finishing. Clarity brought back with cerium oxide, worked wet and judged against light coming through the pane rather than bouncing off it.
Sign off from both sides. Assessed from the pavement, from inside against the display lighting, and at an oblique angle, because that is how a customer approaching the door will see it.
A single pane is usually complete within three hours. The method is written out at acid etched graffiti techniques and removal methods and how to polish shopfront glass to optical clarity.

What We Restore Around Bond Street
- Laminated shopfront and display glazing, including oversized flagship panes.
- Float and low iron glass in display windows and upper floor glazing.
- Toughened glass in entrance screens, doors and internal balustrades.
- Sealed double glazed units, worked from the outer face with the cavity untouched.
- Mirrors and mirrored panels in fitting rooms, display cases and lift lobbies.
- Frosted, etched and decorative glass, re-matched to the existing finish rather than polished flat.
- Entrance thresholds and cladding in polished granite and polished marble.
- Stainless steel and polished metal door furniture, frames, fascias and lift doors.
Etching gel attacks anything with a polished face, and a frontage is usually worked along rather than marked in one spot. Where the damage crosses glass, stone and metal we deal with all of it in a single attendance.
Who We Work For In Mayfair
Flagship and luxury retail. Presentation restored to brand standard, out of hours, with nothing visible to customers.
Jewellers, watch retailers and galleries. Security glazing handled with the specification and the insurance position understood before work begins.
Estate managers and landlords. Mayfair portfolios including listed stock, with documentation suitable for service charge records and client reporting.
Hotels and private members' premises. Entrance and ground floor glazing restored at the hour that inconveniences guests least.
Offices and showrooms. Reception and street level glazing finished before the working day starts.
Who Carries The Cost
The lease decides it in most cases. A demised shopfront is generally the tenant's repairing obligation while the structure, entrance and common parts fall to the landlord and are recovered through the service charge. On a Mayfair building held under a long institutional lease the boundary is not always where people assume, so the demise plan is worth checking before a bill is accepted.
Malicious damage falls within most commercial policies, but the excess is the number that decides it and a restoration frequently comes in beneath it. Brand operations teams also weigh what a claim does to a group renewal. Whichever route you take, dated photography from both sides and a written description of works is issued as standard, in a form that goes straight into a claim file, a service charge record or a head office report.
Keeping It From Happening Again
Restoration returns the pane to clear. It does not deter the next person, and a flagship frontage is a known target once it has been marked.
Sacrificial anti-graffiti film takes the next attack instead of the glass, and is peeled and replaced in minutes rather than restored over hours. On coated and low iron glazing the film specification has to be chosen carefully so that optical clarity and colour rendering are not affected, which is a conversation worth having properly rather than fitting whatever is on the van. Detail is on our anti-acid etched graffiti protection page, with how the film works, how long it lasts, what it costs and whether it affects visibility. For display frontages specifically see protecting retail displays from glass vandalism.

Bond Street Acid Etched Graffiti Removal: Frequently Asked Questions
Can a flagship display window really be restored, or are we buying new glass?
Restoration succeeds on the overwhelming majority of panes. The damage occupies an extraordinarily thin layer at the face of the glass and the work consists of taking that layer away and returning the optical clarity. Replacement is forced only by unusually deep etching, a separate defect in the unit, or a coating in the wrong place. You will know which applies before you commit to anything.
Our glazing is low iron with an anti-reflective coating. Is that a problem?
It is the question that matters most here, and the answer depends on which surface the coating occupies and where the damage sits relative to it. Polishing through a coating destroys it and produces a panel that reads differently in colour and reflectivity from the rest of the elevation. We establish the specification first and tell you plainly if restoration is not appropriate.
How long would replacement actually take?
For bespoke oversized low iron or curved glass, weeks at best and frequently months once survey, manufacture, shipping and installation are counted. That is the gap restoration closes, and on this street it is usually the deciding argument.
Will you work outside trading hours?
Almost always, and we assume it unless told otherwise. Overnight and early morning attendance is standard, and we work to your operations team's access requirements rather than our own convenience.
Will customers or passers by see the work being done?
No. No branded vehicle outside during trading, no work in view of the shop floor, no equipment left across the entrance. By opening there is nothing to see but clean glass.
We have security rated laminated glazing. Can it be treated?
In most cases yes, and the existing unit and its rating stay exactly where they are, which is precisely the advantage over replacement. We establish the specification before starting and we will tell you if the depth of damage means the pane needs specialist assessment rather than restoration.
Our building is listed. Does that affect the decision?
Significantly, and it points towards restoration. Swapping glazing in a listed building can trigger a consent requirement, and works carried out without that consent are a criminal matter rather than a paperwork oversight. Because restoration leaves the fabric untouched, there is nothing to apply for.
Will the treated area be detectable?
It should not be. The worked zone extends well past the mark and tapers away, leaving no edge for the eye to catch. The failure mode is a contractor who polishes the lettering alone and creates a shallow lens that distorts reflections. We assess from the pavement, from inside against the display lighting, and at a low angle before signing off.
There is scratching as well as etching. Can both be addressed?
Yes, and they commonly arrive together. Both respond to the same progressive abrasion and polishing. Depth governs what is achievable and very deep gouges occasionally sit beyond restoration.
What about polished stone thresholds and metal door furniture?
Etching gel damages any polished face, so marble thresholds, granite cladding and steel frames are all affected and all recoverable. Multi surface damage is handled in one attendance.
What does it cost?
Set against a bespoke replacement unit and its installation, restoration comes in up to 90 per cent cheaper. The variables are the affected area, the depth, the glass specification, access and whether protective film is fitted afterwards. The figure is confirmed in writing before we begin. No lazy contractors. No hidden fees.
Should we claim on insurance?
Compare the quote against your excess before notifying anyone, and consider what a claim does at group renewal. A restoration frequently sits below the excess. The photographic record and written works description are issued regardless, ready for a claim file if you need one.
Will film affect how the display looks?
Correctly specified, no. On low iron and anti-reflective glazing the film choice needs care so that clarity and colour rendering are preserved, which is why we discuss the specification rather than fitting a standard product.
Can you cover several stores for a brand or an estate?
Yes. We work across multi site portfolios with a single point of contact, consistent photographic reporting and consolidated invoicing, which suits both brand operations teams and Mayfair estate managers.
How do we start?
Send a photograph. In most cases that alone tells us whether you are dealing with etching, scratching or paint, and lets us give an indication of cost immediately. From there it is an on site assessment, a firm written price, and the work carried out at the hour you specify.
