The window cleaner has been and now there is a pale, clouded shape in the glass that nobody remembers seeing before. It looks as though part of the pane has been frosted deliberately. Nothing takes it off, and if anybody has since attacked it with a blade there are scratches sitting over the top.

Your Window Cleaner Will Find It Before You Do
Chiswick sits astride the main route west out of London, and anything fronting the High Road, the Hogarth roundabout approaches or the A4 corridor carries a permanent film of traffic grime. It turns a straightforward restoration into a harder and more expensive one. If your cleaner finds something that will not wash off and does not feel raised to a fingernail, the instruction should be to stop and photograph it, not to persist.

Three Kinds Of Damage, Three Different Answers
Once the glass is clean, work out which of these you actually have before anybody touches it again.
Paint or marker is sitting on the pane. Solid colour, a defined edge, and a fingernail rides up onto it. Solvent removes it and the glass beneath is untouched. This is the one a cleaner's blade is for.
Acid etching is in the pane. Milky and pale, still letting light through, and a fingernail finds a faint chalkiness flush with the surface rather than standing above it. The edge fades where the gel ran. From inside with the lights on it is far more obvious than from the pavement.
Scratching has been gouged in. Sharp narrow furrows from a blade, a stone or a key, and a fingernail runs into one and stops.

What To Do When It Turns Up
Anything still wet on the glass is a chemical. Etching gel burns skin and eyes. Keep people away from it, and tell your cleaning contractor before their next visit rather than after it.
No blades and no scouring pads, and say so to anybody working on your glass. A scraper leaves permanent scoring in a pane that would have recovered completely.
No graffiti remover. There is nothing for it to dissolve, and on painted timber you risk the frame as well as achieving nothing on the glass.
Where residue is visible and it is safe, run cold water over it in quantity, gloved and with eye protection, letting it carry away rather than wiping across the pane.
Photograph it straight away, dated, from outside and from inside. If it appeared after a window clean, note the date of that clean, because it narrows down when the damage actually happened.

The Method We Use
Reading the pane. Period or modern, float, toughened, laminated, coated, mirrored or a sealed unit, and how far the acid has travelled. On a high street running from Victorian shopfronts to units fitted last year, that varies from door to door.
Depth assessment and a trial patch. The approach is proved on a small area out of view before the whole pane is committed to.
Masking and containment. Beads, putty lines, paintwork, frames, seals, vinyl lettering and signage are protected. Slurry is contained, and on the towpath that containment is built to keep everything out of the river rather than merely off the paving.
Working down through the grades. Each abrasive stage finer than the last, taking off a depth of glass no eye could measure, with the treated area carried well past the mark so it fades rather than ending at a line. Work the tag alone and you are left with a dished patch, a shallow lens in the pane, bending whatever sits behind it. In a shop window full of stock it is the first thing anybody notices.
Cerium oxide to finish. The last of the haze comes back under wet cerium oxide, judged by looking through the glass towards the light rather than at what bounces off it.
Checked from inside. Customers spend more time looking out through a shop window than passers by spend looking at it, so the last assessment is made standing behind the display with the light coming towards us.

Our building is in a conservation area.

Our shopfront is painted timber. Does that complicate matters?

Do we have to close or board up?
Neither. Nothing comes out of the frame at any stage, so there is no opening to protect and you keep trading right through it.
Will the repair be visible?
It should not be. We run the treatment a long way past the damage and thin it out, so nothing marks where it finishes. The mistake to avoid is a contractor working the tag on its own, which sinks a shallow lens into the middle of the pane and warps whatever is behind it.
What about the handrail and the letter plate?
Marked as often as the glass on a parade, and both recoverable. Polished metal, stone steps and cills are handled alongside the window.
Can you treat toughened, laminated and sealed units?
All three. The gel only reaches the outer face, so a sealed unit keeps its cavity and seal intact. Each type needs a different approach, which is why the pane is identified first.
