Gel has been left in contact with the glass long enough to corrode it, and the surface that remains is disrupted at a scale fine enough to bounce light about rather than transmit it. A Venue That Opens At Ten Finds Monday's Damage On Tuesday Night
Vauxhall's late venues have a problem no shop has, and it is not the hours they keep. It is the hours they do not.
A retailer is present for most of the daylight day and finds damage within hours of it appearing. The second Vauxhall particular is a genuine misconception about the new towers.
A great deal of residential development here puts hundreds of homes directly above commercial ground floors. It looks, on paper, like the most watched street frontage in London. In practice it is not.

Two things follow for anybody managing ground floor commercial space in a tower.
Inspection has to be somebody's job. If nobody is assigned to walk the perimeter, the perimeter does not get walked, regardless of how many people live above it.
And the quiet hours are genuinely quiet. Between the last of the evening trade and the first commuters, a tower base on a wide road has almost nobody at street level at all.

Every one of those is delivered by a coating, and on many units that coating sits on a face that matters. Working through it does not repair anything: it destroys the treatment and leaves a panel whose colour and reflectivity no longer match the run it belongs to, which on a long modern elevation is obvious from across a wide road.
So the specification is established before any price is given. Where a building is recent enough for the facade documentation to exist, that answers it fastest and we will ask for it. Three Kinds Of Damage
They look alike at a distance and each takes a different route.
Paint or marker is a deposit on the surface. Opaque, hard edged, and a fingernail climbs onto it. Solvent removes it and the pane beneath is untouched.
Acid etching is in the surface. Clouded and pale while light still passes through, with a slight coarseness level with the glass around it. Its outline is diffuse rather than defined, since the gel continued to travel until it was halted. Seen from inside a lit room it reads far more strongly than from the street.
Scratching is a mechanical incision. Narrow bright cuts from a blade, a stone or a key, that a fingernail drops straight into.

The First Hour After Opening Up
Wet residue is still a live chemical. The gel damages skin and eyes. Keep staff and arriving customers away from it rather than assuming it has dried off over the day, because it may not have.
Nothing sharp and nothing abrasive. A scraper leaves permanent lines in a pane that would have recovered, and wiping wet gel carries the damage onto glass that had none.
Graffiti removers do nothing here. They are made to break down a coating and there is no coating, and on treated or coated glazing they add a second problem.
Flush it with plenty of cold water where residue is visible and it is safe, gloved and with eye protection, letting it drain rather than spreading it about.
Photograph it, dated, from outside and inside, and note when the premises was last occupied. On a late venue that window may be a day or more wide, and it is the first thing you will be asked.
Pull the footage for the whole closed period, not just the night. The closing-time recording is the obvious place to look and frequently the wrong one.

How The Work Is Carried Out
Establishing the pane. Plain float, toughened, laminated, coated, anti-reflective, mirrored or a sealed unit, whether film is applied and to which face, and how deep the acid has gone. On the newer buildings the facade documentation settles it fastest.
A concealed trial. We prove the method on a small hidden patch before taking on the whole pane.
Masking and containment. Frames, gaskets, seals, manifestation, vinyl and signage are protected, and the slurry is contained and kept off a footway that carries interchange flow at peak.
Through the abrasive grades. Each stage finer than the last, taking off a thickness of glass the eye cannot register, and running the treated zone well past the mark so it disappears rather than stopping at a line. Restrict it to the tag and a shallow lens is left sunk into the pane, distorting what is behind it, and on a large elevation seen from across a wide road that is precisely what shows.
Cerium oxide to finish. The last of the haze is polished out wet with cerium oxide, judged with light coming through the pane rather than reflecting from it.
Checked from both sides. From the pavement, from inside against the interior lighting, and at an oblique angle, since on a wide junction people see your glass sideways far more often than square on.
A single pane is normally finished within three hours, and longer on weathered damage. Making A Repeat Less Likely
Clearing the pane settles this incident and goes no further. It deters no one, and premises left dark and empty right through a working day present an easier target than a shop with somebody at the till.
Protective film is bonded over the outside face so that the film takes the next attack rather than the pane. Peeling it off and replacing it is quick and costs a fraction of restoring the glass again. On a late venue that case is stronger than average: the premises stands empty and unattended for most of every day, a repeat is more likely than not, and the film soaks it up without costing you another restoration and another afternoon.
On coated, low iron and anti-reflective glazing the product has to be matched so that clarity and colour rendering are unaffected, which is worth a proper conversation rather than fitting whatever is to hand.

Can the pane be restored or does it need replacing?
Restored, in the great majority of cases. What the acid has attacked is a skin of the surface measured in fractions of a millimetre, and the job is to take that skin off uniformly and polish the pane back to clear. Replacement is only forced where the burn has gone exceptionally deep, the seal had gone already, or a coating occupies the surface we would have to cross.
Our glazing is coated.
Then it depends where the coating sits relative to the damage. Abrading into it destroys it and leaves that panel out of step with the rest of the elevation in colour and reflectivity. If you have the facade documentation it answers this fastest.
Do we have to close or board up?
Neither. Nothing leaves the frame at any stage, so the frontage stays whole and you open as normal that evening.
Will the repair be visible?
It should not be. We carry the treatment far past the damaged area and thin it to nothing, so there is no line anywhere. Poor work confines itself to the tag, hollowing a shallow lens into the pane, and from the far side of a wide road that is the one thing the eye catches.
There is scratching as well as etching.
One visit covers both, because an etch and a score are lifted by the same progression of abrasives and the same finishing polish. Depth is the only thing that limits us.
What about the door furniture and the handrails?
Marked as readily as the glass on a venue entrance, and recoverable. Metalwork and stone are dealt with alongside the glazing.
