There is a clouded area in the window that will not come clean. Only that part of the pane looks frosted; the rest is entirely unaffected. If a blade has been taken to it since, scoring now lies over the top of the original damage.
This is acid etched graffiti. A corrosive gel has been left sitting on the glass long enough to corrode it, and what remains is a surface broken up so finely that light scatters off it instead of travelling through. Nothing sits on top to be cleaned away. The pane itself is the damage.

When You Own The Building, It Is An Asset Decision
A great deal of the trade along the High Road is in the hands of families who have been here for decades and who own their premises outright. That is unusual in London and it changes the whole shape of this decision, because almost every piece of advice written about shopfront damage quietly assumes there is a landlord somewhere.

Replacement is a permanent change to your own building. A new pane in an older shopfront means disturbed beads and putty, fresh paintwork against weathered paintwork, and glass that does not match what sits either side of it. Those are changes you live with, not ones you hand on at the end of a term.

Telling The Three Apart
They look alike from a few paces and each takes a different route.
Paint or marker is a layer on the outside. Opaque, cleanly bounded, and a fingernail climbs up over it. The right solvent removes it entirely and the glass beneath is unaffected.
Acid etching is inside the glass. Pale and clouded while light still comes through, with a faint grittiness sitting level with the surface rather than on it. It softens away at the edges instead of ending cleanly, because the gel went on running until somebody stopped it. Lit from within it shows up far more than it does from the street.
Scratching is a physical gouge. Hard glittering channels from a blade, a stone or a key, which a fingernail drops into.

The First Hour
Residue on the glass is still active. The gel burns skin and eyes, so keep everyone clear of it, and where there are flats above the shop the residents should be told directly rather than left to find out.
Nothing sharp, nothing abrasive. A blade will leave scoring that cannot be lifted from a pane which was otherwise entirely recoverable, and a cloth pulled through wet gel transfers the problem to clean glass nearby.
Nothing on the shutter housing either. Abrasive metal polish worked at one spot hollows the plate locally and leaves a dished patch on top of the original mark.
Flush it with cold water if residue is visible and reachable in safety, wearing gloves and eye protection, and let the water carry it away rather than working it across the glass.
Photograph it, dated, from outside and inside, and include the shutter in the frame whether or not it looks affected. That single detail dates the incident.
Report it as criminal damage. The reference will be wanted before any insurer engages. The order of steps is at what to do when your shop window is vandalised.
How The Restoration Is Done
Reading the frontage. The glass first: its age, then plain float, toughened, laminated, coated, mirrored or a sealed unit, and the depth the burn has reached. Then the shutter housing, grille and any metalwork, assessed separately.
Depth reading, then a trial patch. The technique is confirmed on a small hidden area before we commit to the rest.
Masking and containment. Beads, putty lines, paintwork, frames, shutter guides, vinyl lettering and signage are protected, and the slurry stays within the working area and off the pavement.
Down through the abrasive grades. We step through progressively finer grades, lifting away a thickness of glass no eye could detect, and extend the treated area a long way past the mark so it tapers out with no visible line. Restrict the work to the tag itself and you get a shallow lens in the pane, distorting everything behind it, which in a display full of stock is what a customer notices first.
Metalwork taken back evenly. Shutter housings and grilles are worked across the whole face rather than locally, so the finish reads as one surface afterwards.
Cerium oxide on the glass to finish. What cloudiness survives the abrasion is taken out wet under cerium oxide, assessed from the side where daylight travels through the pane.
Checked from both sides. From outside, from within against the shop lighting, and from a sharp angle, since people meet a frontage sideways long before they stand square to it.
Expect around three hours for one pane, more if it has been left out in the weather. Should I polish the shutter box myself first?
Please do not. An abrasive polish worked at one spot hollows it locally and leaves a dished area on top of the original damage. Photograph it and leave it to us.
Can you tell when it happened?
Often, from the shutter. An undamaged solid shutter over etched glass means it happened while the shutter was up, so during trading hours. Mesh and perforated shutters are different, because gel can be applied through them, and the mark frequently shows the pattern of the grille.

Is protective film worth fitting?
