Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Project Overview
A high-end boutique fashion retailer required urgent specialist intervention at their Shoreditch location following a targeted act of vandalism. One of their main display windows facing Commercial Road had been defaced with a single, exceptionally large acid etched tag sprawled across the glass.
Given the premium nature of the boutique and the heavy footfall of shoppers and commuters in this fashionable district, the client needed a rapid, flawless restoration. Boarding up the window for a costly replacement was not a viable option, as it would severely disrupt trading and damage the brand's visual identity.
Location
- Area: Shoreditch, East London
- Borough: London Borough of Tower Hamlets
- Property Type: Commercial (Boutique Fashion Retailer)
- Client: Boutique Fashion Retailer
- Date Completed: May 2026
The Challenge
The primary challenge was the severity of the chemical damage combined with the logistical constraints of the location. Acid etching creates permanent scarring by physically eating into the glass substrate. The large scale of the tag meant that a significant portion of the display window required precision resurfacing to avoid any visual distortion.
Furthermore, Commercial Road experiences an extremely high volume of pedestrian traffic. The restoration had to be completed safely and discreetly, maintaining unrestricted public access on the pavement and ensuring customers could enter the boutique without obstruction.
Initial Assessment
Our specialist glass restoration team conducted an immediate site survey to measure the depth of the chemical burn across the prominent window pane. We mapped the affected area to plan a restoration strategy that would maintain uniform optical clarity across the entire display.
A rigorous health and safety protocol was established. We designed a compact, self-contained work zone on the pavement, utilizing clear barriers to safely guide pedestrians around the technicians while keeping the storefront fully visible and accessible.
Our Approach
We deployed our highly specialized, multi-stage glass polishing and restoration system. Rather than simply cleaning the glass, this technique physically "shaves" the surface down to the lowest point of the acid etch using controlled abrasives, before meticulously polishing it back to total transparency.
This localized mechanical process allowed us to completely eradicate the vandalism on-site, offering a sustainable, cost-effective alternative to ordering a bespoke commercial glass replacement.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Secure the Commercial Road work zone, implementing pedestrian safety controls to maintain unrestricted public access
Step 2: Decontaminate the display window to fully expose the severity and precise boundaries of the acid etched tag
Step 3: Perform graded abrasive grinding to physically remove the chemically damaged layers of the glass substrate
Step 4: Execute fine-stage precision polishing to restore 100% optical clarity and eliminate any visual "lensing"
Step 5: Apply a final hydrophobic treatment and conduct a rigorous quality inspection to ensure a pristine, retail-ready finish
Results
The large acid etched tag was completely eradicated, and the structural integrity of the display window was flawlessly preserved. The glass was restored to a perfect, "like-new" condition, allowing the boutique's visual merchandising to be viewed without any distortion.
Despite the intense footfall of the Shoreditch location, the project was executed swiftly and discreetly, causing zero disruption to the general public or the boutique’s daily retail operations.
