Project Overview
SGI-UK required highly sensitive, urgent graffiti removal at the London Ikeda Peace Centre, their flagship Buddhist centre in Kings Cross. The prominent street-facing brick walls of the property had been targeted with sprawled, obscene graffiti.
Given the building's status as a place of peace, community, and religious practice, the offensive nature of the vandalism caused significant distress. The client required an immediate, respectful, and highly effective restoration to return the building to its pristine condition, despite the logistical challenges of operating on a busy Central London street.
Location
- Area: Kings Cross, Central London
- Borough: London Borough of Camden
- Property Type: Commercial / Community (Buddhist Centre)
- Client: SGI-UK (London Ikeda Peace Centre)
- Date Completed: April 2026
The Challenge
The primary challenge was the combination of the offensive damage on a highly sensitive community building and the complex urban environment. The graffiti was applied directly to porous street-facing brickwork. Using abrasive blasting or overly aggressive chemicals risked driving the aerosol pigment deeper into the masonry, causing permanent "ghosting" or structural pitting.
Logistically, the Kings Cross location experiences exceptionally high footfall. The works had to be completed discreetly and safely within a limited physical footprint on the pavement, ensuring absolutely no disruption to the general public or visitors attending the centre.
Initial Assessment
Our rapid-response restoration team conducted a thorough site survey to evaluate the porosity of the brickwork and the chemical composition of the aerosol tags.
We formulated a specialized, non-destructive cleaning strategy designed to completely lift the obscenities without damaging the underlying masonry. A strict pedestrian management plan was implemented to establish a secure, localized work zone, safely routing the busy Central London foot traffic around our technicians while maintaining clear access to the building’s entrance.
Our Approach
We deployed the industry-leading DOFF superheated steam cleaning system combined with masonry-safe chemical poultices. The DOFF system is highly effective for sensitive restorations; it utilizes superheated water at temperatures up to 150°C but operates at a very low pressure.
This intense thermal shock gently breaks down and melts the heavy aerosol resins, allowing the paint to be drawn out of the porous brick naturally. This sympathetic architectural approach guarantees that the structural integrity and aesthetic value of the street-facing brickwork are perfectly preserved.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Secure the work zone on the busy Kings Cross street, implementing pedestrian safety cordons to manage high footfall
Step 2: Apply a specialized, masonry-safe chemical poultice to begin emulsifying the obscene aerosol pigments safely
Step 3: Deploy the DOFF superheated steam system to gently lift and extract the dissolved paint from deep within the porous brick
Step 4: Conduct a systematic cleaning of the street-facing elevations to ensure a uniform, flawless finish without cross-contamination
Step 5: Perform a final low-pressure rinse and rigorous quality inspection to guarantee complete eradication with zero ghosting
Results
The obscene graffiti was entirely eradicated from the flagship centre's exterior. Thanks to the precision application of the DOFF system, the street-facing brickwork was restored to its pristine, original condition without any structural damage or visual scarring.
Despite the intense footfall and limited access of the Camden area, the project was executed swiftly, safely, and with the utmost respect for the community facility.
Before and After
Before: Obscene, highly visible graffiti sprawled across the street-facing porous brickwork of a prominent Buddhist peace centre
After: Flawlessly restored masonry, completely free of vandalism and returned to its respectful, natural state

Client Outcome
The rapid and technically flawless restoration provided immediate reassurance to SGI-UK, its members, and the local community. By utilizing sympathetic, substrate-approved cleaning methods, DUA London successfully eliminated the offensive vandalism, instantly restoring the dignity and welcoming appearance of the London Ikeda Peace Centre.
Why This Project Matters
This case study highlights the critical importance of a rapid, sensitive response when religious or community buildings are targeted by vandalism. It also demonstrates DUA London’s unmatched capability to manage complex restorations in high-pressure Central London environments, utilizing the DOFF system to ensure heritage and porous brickwork is never damaged during the removal process.
