Three Kinds Of Damage
They look alike from a distance and each takes a different route.
Paint or marker is a deposit on the surface. Opaque, hard edged, and a fingernail climbs onto it. Solvent removes it and the pane beneath is unaffected.
Acid etching is in the surface. Pale and clouded while light still passes through, with a slight coarseness level with the glass around it. There is no crisp boundary, since the gel went on migrating until it was checked. Against a lit interior it reads far more strongly than from the pavement.
Scratching is made physically. Thin bright cuts from a blade, a stone or a key, and a fingernail lodges in them at once.

The First Hour
Wet residue is still corrosive. The gel harms skin and eyes, so nobody handles it, and on a frontage carrying visitor flow the affected section needs cordoning rather than staff simply being told.
Nothing sharp and nothing abrasive. Scraping puts scoring into a pane that was fully recoverable, and running a cloth over wet gel takes the damage across to glazing that had escaped it.
Graffiti removers achieve nothing. They are formulated to dissolve a coating and none exists here, and on treated or coated glazing they introduce a second problem.
Flood it with cold water where residue is visible and it is safe, gloved and with eye protection, letting it drain rather than working it across the pane.

Checked from both faces. From outside, from within against the interior lighting, and at an oblique angle, and where the damage crosses several panels each is compared against its untreated neighbours so the run reads as one surface.
