Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Hackney

Project Overview
The Arch Company, the UK’s largest small business landlord, required urgent specialist assistance at one of their commercial properties in Hackney. The premises, facing the highly trafficked Morning Lane, had been targeted by severe vandalism, with multiple large, obscene acid etched tags sprawled across several large commercial window panels.
Due to the offensive nature of the graffiti and the extreme footfall of the East London location, the client needed a rapid and comprehensive restoration. Replacing multiple large commercial panes would have incurred exorbitant costs and significant lead times; therefore, specialized glass restoration was the only viable solution.
Location
- Area: Hackney, East London
- Borough: London Borough of Hackney
- Property Type: Commercial
- Client: The Arch Company
- Date Completed: May 2026
The Challenge
The complexity of this project lay in the sheer scale of the damage. Acid etching physically burns into the structural surface of the glass, creating permanent chemical scarring. Managing this across multiple large-format commercial panels requires extreme precision to ensure uniform clarity and structural integrity.
Furthermore, Morning Lane experiences extremely high pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The restoration had to be conducted safely while strictly maintaining public access, ensuring there was minimal disruption to the surrounding local businesses and the general public.
Initial Assessment
Our technical glass restoration team conducted an immediate on-site survey to map the depth and spread of the chemical burns across the various window panels.
A rigorous health and safety strategy was established. We designed a compact, secure working footprint on the Morning Lane pavement, utilizing physical cordons to safely route pedestrian traffic around the active work zone without causing bottlenecks or forcing the public into the road.
Our Approach
We deployed our highly specialized, multi-stage glass polishing and restoration system. This technique physically resurfaces the glass, mechanically "shaving" the affected areas down to the lowest point of the acid etch before systematically refining and polishing the surface back to total transparency.
By applying this localized abrasive process, we successfully bypassed the need for full window replacement, delivering a highly cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution for the client.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Secure the Morning Lane work zone, establishing pedestrian safety controls to maintain unrestricted public access
Step 2: Decontaminate the glass surfaces to fully expose the severity and boundaries of the multiple acid etched tags
Step 3: Execute graded abrasive grinding across all affected large-format panels to physically remove the chemical scarring
Step 4: Perform fine-stage precision polishing to restore 100% optical clarity and eliminate any visual distortion or "lensing"
Step 5: Apply a final hydrophobic treatment and conduct a rigorous quality inspection to ensure a pristine finish
Results
All obscene acid etched tags were completely eradicated. The structural integrity and original clarity of the large commercial glass panels were flawlessly restored.
Despite the extreme footfall and challenging urban environment of East London, the project was completed efficiently and safely, causing zero disruption to the general public or neighbouring businesses.
Before and After
Before: Multiple large, obscene acid etched tags sprawled across several prominent commercial glass panels on Morning Lane
After: Fully restored, optically clear commercial windows with no distortion or evidence of the previous chemical vandalism

Client Outcome
By utilizing DUA London’s specialist glass restoration services, The Arch Company successfully maintained the professional standard of their commercial portfolio. The immediate removal of the offensive vandalism protected the local community environment and deterred further antisocial behaviour on a prominent Hackney thoroughfare.
Why This Project Matters
