Project Overview
Pick Store, a multidisciplinary Japanese lifestyle and retail store, required immediate exterior restoration at their premises in Shoreditch. The boutique’s prominent shopfront had been severely vandalised with obscene black graffiti sprawled across multiple architectural finishes, including the natural wooden panels, painted metal shop frames, and commercial glass.
Given the premium nature of the brand and the offensive nature of the tags, the client required an urgent, comprehensive clean-up. The restoration needed to be executed flawlessly to protect the store's visual identity, all while navigating the logistical constraints of operating on a busy East London street.
Location
- Area: Shoreditch, East London
- Borough: London Borough of Hackney
- Property Type: Commercial (Retail Store)
- Client: Pick Store
- Date Completed: June 2026
The Challenge
The complexity of this project lay in the diverse range of vandalised substrates. Natural wood is highly porous and can easily absorb aerosol pigments, making it notoriously difficult to clean without leaving a "ghosted" shadow or splintering the grain with high pressure. Conversely, the painted metal frames and glass required completely different chemical approaches to ensure the underlying paint and structural integrity remained intact.
Additionally, the Shoreditch location experiences extremely high pedestrian footfall. The restoration had to be conducted safely within a restricted public access zone, ensuring shoppers and passing pedestrians were protected, and the store could continue its daily operations without disruption.
Initial Assessment
Our rapid-response technical team conducted an on-site material analysis to categorize the various substrates. We developed a bespoke, multi-surface cleaning strategy, selecting specific biodegradable poultices for the porous wood and non-abrasive gel solvents for the metal and glass.
A strict health and safety protocol was established. We deployed a localized pedestrian management system, erecting secure cordons that allowed East London's heavy foot traffic to safely bypass our technicians while keeping the storefront accessible.
Our Approach
We deployed a targeted, substrate-specific extraction process. For the natural wooden panels, we applied a specialized wood-safe chemical poultice to draw the heavy black aerosol resins out of the grain, followed by a gentle, low-pressure steam extraction to lift the dissolved pigment without warping the wood.
For the painted metal frames and commercial glass, we utilized non-abrasive gel solvents. These allowed for precise chemical dwell time, emulsifying the graffiti without reacting with the delicate factory paint on the metalwork or scratching the glass, ensuring a uniform, immaculate finish across the entire facade.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Establish a secure working perimeter on the busy Shoreditch street, implementing pedestrian safety controls
Step 2: Apply wood-safe chemical poultices to the natural panels to safely draw the black pigment out of the porous grain
Step 3: Utilize non-abrasive gel solvents on the painted metal frames and glass to emulsify the graffiti without damaging the underlying finishes
Step 4: Deploy gentle low-pressure steam extraction to systematically lift the dissolved paint from all surfaces without cross-contamination
Step 5: Perform a final neutralizing rinse and thorough quality inspection to ensure complete removal with zero ghosting or substrate damage
Results
The obscene graffiti was entirely eradicated from all surfaces. The natural wooden panels, painted metal frames, and commercial glass were flawlessly restored to their pristine, original condition with absolutely no structural or aesthetic damage.
Despite the multi-surface complexity and the intense footfall of the Shoreditch location, the project was executed swiftly and safely, ensuring Pick Store’s premium brand image was fully protected.
Before and After
Before: Obscene black graffiti sprawled across a multi-surface retail facade, covering natural wood, metal framing, and glass
After: A fully restored, pristine storefront, with all materials returned to their original, undamaged state

Client Outcome
The rapid and highly technical restoration provided immediate relief to the Pick Store management team. By utilizing substrate-appropriate cleaning methods, DUA London successfully eliminated the offensive tags across the complex facade, avoiding the significant cost and disruption of having to replace the bespoke wooden panelling or repaint the shopfront.
Why This Project Matters
This case study perfectly demonstrates DUA London’s expertise in multi-surface commercial restorations. Retail facades often feature a mix of delicate materials; applying a "one-size-fits-all" cleaning method will inevitably cause irreversible damage. Our ability to tailor chemical and mechanical approaches to wood, metal, and glass simultaneously ensures architectural integrity is always preserved.
