Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Hackney

Project Overview
NGE Music, a professional music booking agency, required urgent, multi-discipline exterior restoration at their commercial premises in Hackney. The building had been severely vandalised, suffering from several thick layers of spray paint sprawled across the exterior render, metal door, and commercial windows.
Adding to the severity of the damage, the vandals had also applied acid etched graffiti to the windows, which was subsequently covered by heavy layers of spray paint. The client required a comprehensive, highly technical restoration to rescue the facade, navigating a high-footfall urban environment with limited access.
Location
- Area: Hackney, East London
- Borough: London Borough of Hackney
- Property Type: Commercial (Music Agency)
- Client: NGE Music
- Date Completed: July 2026
The Challenge
This project was exceptionally complex because it involved multi-layered vandalism across three entirely different substrates: delicate render, a metal security door, and commercial glass. Each surface required a completely different chemical and mechanical approach to prevent irreversible damage.
Crucially, the hidden acid etched graffiti on the windows meant that simply washing the paint away would reveal permanently scarred glass underneath, necessitating a secondary glass polishing phase. Logistically, the high-level tagging required safe working-at-height protocols in an area with restricted access and heavy pedestrian traffic, demanding strict public safety cordons.
Initial Assessment
Our rapid-response technical team conducted a meticulous site survey to map out the varying substrates and layers of vandalism. Once we identified the acid etching hidden beneath the aerosol tags on the glass, we developed a multi-stage restoration strategy.
A rigorous health and safety plan was implemented to manage the limited access footprint. We deployed pedestrian cordons to safely route the East London foot traffic around our technicians and elevated equipment, ensuring public safety and minimal disruption.
Our Approach
We deployed a tailored, three-pronged restoration approach. For the delicate render, we utilized the DOFF superheated steam system to gently melt and extract the heavy pigments without blasting away the substrate. For the metal door, we applied specialized, metal-safe gel solvents to dissolve the paint without damaging the underlying finish.
Finally, for the windows, we first stripped away the thick layers of spray paint before deploying our mechanical glass polishing system. This abrasive resurfacing technique successfully "shaved" the glass down past the chemical acid burns, polishing it back to complete optical clarity.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Secure the limited access work zone, deploying pedestrian cordons and safe working-at-height equipment
Step 2: Apply substrate-specific chemical poultices to the metal door and render to begin emulsifying the thick aerosol layers
Step 3: Utilize the DOFF superheated steam system (150°C at low pressure) to safely extract the dissolved paint from the delicate render
Step 4: Strip the heavy spray paint from the windows to expose the severe acid etched vandalism beneath
Step 5: Execute graded abrasive grinding and precision glass polishing to completely eradicate the chemical burns and restore optical clarity
Results
The heavily vandalised facade was completely transformed. All layers of spray paint were successfully eradicated from the render and metal door with absolutely zero substrate damage. Furthermore, the hidden acid etched tags were flawlessly removed, restoring the commercial windows to perfect transparency.
Despite the limited access and the intense footfall of the Hackney location, the multi-discipline project was executed safely, discreetly, and to an immaculate standard.
Before and After
Before: Severe, multi-layered spray paint covering commercial render, a metal door, and windows, concealing severe acid etched damage
After: A fully restored, pristine commercial facade, with perfectly clean render, unharmed metalwork, and optically clear glass

Client Outcome
By utilizing DUA London’s multi-faceted restoration services, NGE Music successfully reclaimed their professional brand identity. Reversing this severe, multi-substrate vandalism in a single, coordinated operation saved the client the immense cost and downtime of replacing the render, metal door, and commercial windows.
Why This Project Matters
This case study perfectly demonstrates DUA London's comprehensive technical expertise. When dealing with extreme vandalism across varying delicate surfaces—including hidden acid etching—clients require a contractor capable of deploying DOFF steam cleaning, chemical extraction, and mechanical glass polishing simultaneously.
