Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Croydon

Project Overview
Kwik Fit, a leading national automotive servicing chain, required specialist exterior restoration at their Croydon branch following a severe vandalism incident. A large, highly visible silver graffiti tag had been sprawled entirely across their main illuminated plastic storefront signage.
Because the signage is critical to the branch's brand visibility and customer wayfinding, the client required an immediate, comprehensive restoration. The challenge was compounded by the fact that the vandalised surface was delicate plastic, which is easily melted, scratched, or clouded by standard graffiti removal techniques.
Location
- Area: Croydon, South London
- Borough: London Borough of Croydon
- Property Type: Commercial (Automotive Service Centre)
- Client: Kwik Fit
- Date Completed: May 2026
The Challenge
This project required extreme technical precision due to the substrate involved. Plastic signage is highly susceptible to chemical "burning" and abrasive scratching. Standard strong solvents used for masonry graffiti will instantly melt or cloud acrylic and polycarbonate materials, permanently ruining the illuminated branding.
Additionally, the signage was located at height, above the active bays of a busy commercial premises. The restoration had to be conducted safely while strictly maintaining public access, ensuring there was minimal disruption to Kwik Fit’s operational flow and the surrounding pedestrian footfall.
Initial Assessment
Our rapid-response team conducted an immediate site survey to identify the specific type of plastic used in the signage and the chemical composition of the silver aerosol paint. Metallic paints like silver contain dense, reflective pigments that are notoriously stubborn to lift without smearing.
A careful access plan was developed to safely reach the main signage above the service bays. We established a secure, localized work zone that allowed Kwik Fit to remain open and operational, safely diverting customer vehicles and pedestrians around our elevated equipment.
Our Approach
We deployed a highly specialized, non-abrasive chemical extraction process specifically formulated for delicate synthetics. By utilizing a controlled, plastic-safe gel poultice, we were able to break down the dense silver metallic resins without relying on aggressive scrubbing or harsh, melting solvents.
This sympathetic approach allowed the silver paint to emulsify safely so it could be gently wiped away, preserving the structural integrity, translucency, and vibrant brand colours of the original Kwik Fit signage beneath.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Secure the work zone, deploying safe working-at-height access equipment while ensuring clear public and vehicle access to the service centre
Step 2: Application of a specialized, plastic-safe chemical gel poultice to slowly break down the dense metallic silver pigments
Step 3: Careful dwell-time monitoring to ensure the metallic aerosol emulsifies without reacting with the delicate acrylic substrate
Step 4: Gentle, non-abrasive lifting of the dissolved paint, utilizing microfiber technology to prevent any surface scratching
Step 5: Final neutralizing wipe-down and rigorous quality inspection to ensure absolute clarity and zero ghosting on the illuminated branding
Results
The large silver graffiti tag was completely eradicated. Thanks to the precision application of our plastic-safe treatments, the delicate storefront signage was restored to its original, vibrant condition with absolutely no scratching, clouding, or chemical burning.
The high-level works were completed safely and efficiently, with minimal disruption to the service centre's daily operations and surrounding pedestrian traffic.
Before and After
Before: A large, dense silver graffiti tag sprawled across delicate commercial plastic signage, obscuring the brand identity
After: Fully restored, vibrant illuminated signage with no scratching or chemical damage to the plastic substrate

Client Outcome
The rapid, technically sound restoration provided immediate relief to the Kwik Fit branch manager. By utilizing substrate-appropriate cleaning methods, we preserved the aesthetic value of their primary branding, avoiding the significant cost and lead time of ordering bespoke replacement commercial signage.
Why This Project Matters
This case study highlights the critical importance of matching the cleaning methodology to the substrate. Treating delicate plastics requires specialized chemical knowledge; using the wrong solvent will instantly destroy a commercial sign. It demonstrates DUA London’s capability to manage sensitive material restorations while delivering flawless results in busy commercial environments.
