Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Hackney

Project Overview
The owner of a premium residential waterfront property in Hackney required specialist graffiti removal following a vandalism incident. A large tag had been sprawled directly across the property's picturesque canal-facing brick wall.
Because the property is situated along a highly frequented East London canal towpath, the vandalism was highly visible to passing pedestrian and cyclist traffic. The client required a rapid, sensitive restoration that would return the lovely masonry to its original state without posing any environmental risk to the adjacent waterway.
Location
- Area: Hackney, East London
- Borough: London Borough of Hackney
- Property Type: Residential (Waterfront Property)
- Client: Private Residential Client
- Date Completed: April 2026
The Challenge
Canal-side graffiti removal presents a highly specific set of environmental and logistical challenges. The primary concern is ecological safety: the use of harsh chemical solvents or high-pressure washing risks contaminated wastewater running directly into the canal ecosystem, which strictly violates environmental regulations.
Additionally, the site presented severe access limitations. The canal towpath is narrow and experiences high footfall, meaning large-scale industrial access equipment could not be easily deployed without blocking the public right of way. Finally, the brick substrate is naturally porous, requiring a delicate touch to avoid blowing the face off the masonry or driving the aerosol paint deeper into the stone.
Initial Assessment
Our technical restoration team conducted a site visit to assess the brickwork's porosity and map the logistical constraints of the narrow towpath.
We formulated a strict environmental containment strategy. Rather than using traditional aggressive washing, we opted for a low-water, high-heat approach combined with eco-friendly, biodegradable poultices to ensure zero toxic runoff. A pedestrian management plan was also established to safely navigate towpath users around our compact, localized work zone.
Our Approach
We deployed the industry-leading DOFF superheated steam cleaning system. The DOFF system is the gold standard for heritage and waterfront masonry because it utilizes superheated steam (up to 150°C) at an exceptionally low pressure, minimizing water usage.
This intense thermal shock melts the aerosol resins safely, allowing the paint to be lifted from the porous brick without the need for abrasive scrubbing. By utilizing specialized wet-vacuum recovery tools at the base of the wall, we captured the minimal wastewater generated, ensuring absolute protection of the canal environment.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Establish a compact, secure work zone on the narrow towpath, implementing safety controls for passing pedestrians and cyclists
Step 2: Install environmental containment barriers at the base of the brick wall to prevent any runoff into the canal water
Step 3: Apply a biodegradable, masonry-safe poultice to begin gently emulsifying the aerosol pigments
Step 4: Deploy the DOFF superheated steam system to lift the dissolved paint from the porous brick utilizing 150°C low-pressure steam
Step 5: Instantly recover all wastewater using wet-vacuum systems, followed by a final inspection to ensure a pristine, damage-free finish
Results
The sprawled graffiti was completely eradicated from the canal-facing wall. The DOFF system successfully restored the brickwork to its beautiful, original condition without any pitting, ghosting, or structural damage.
Crucially, the project was executed with 100% environmental compliance—zero contaminated runoff entered the waterway. The narrow towpath remained open and safe for public use throughout the entire operation.
Before and After
Before: Large, unsightly graffiti sprawled across the porous brick wall of a premium canal-side residential property
After: Flawlessly restored brickwork, returned to its natural state with complete environmental containment

Client Outcome
The homeowner was delighted to see their beautiful waterfront property restored to its former glory. By utilizing specialist, eco-friendly removal techniques, we protected the aesthetic and financial value of their home while providing total peace of mind regarding the local canal ecosystem.
Why This Project Matters
This case study highlights DUA London’s expertise in navigating logistically difficult, environmentally sensitive environments. Waterfront properties and narrow public towpaths require a specialized approach; our use of the DOFF system and strict wastewater containment proves that high-quality restoration and ecological responsibility can go hand-in-hand.
