Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Wandsworth

Project Overview

A residential managing agent required urgent specialist graffiti removal services at a riverside property in Battersea. The residential complex, situated directly along the River Thames, had been vandalised with several large, multi-coloured graffiti tags applied directly to the building's exterior porous brickwork.

Due to the prominent location—a highly frequented route for both local residents and tourists—the vandalism significantly impacted the visual amenity of the area. The client required a rapid, comprehensive restoration that would protect the delicate masonry while navigating the logistical challenges of limited site access and high pedestrian footfall.

Location

  • Area: Battersea, South London
  • Borough: London Borough of Wandsworth
  • Property Type: Residential
  • Client: Residential Managing Agent
  • Date Completed: May 2026

The Challenge

This project presented a triad of distinct challenges. First, the vandalism consisted of heavily pigmented, multi-coloured tags on soft, porous brick. Such substrates readily absorb aerosol paints, meaning aggressive abrasive cleaning would cause irreversible structural damage to the brick face.

Second, the site suffered from restricted physical access, making the deployment of standard industrial cleaning equipment difficult. Finally, the riverside location experiences constant, high-volume footfall. Strict environmental controls were also mandatory to ensure zero chemical or wastewater runoff entered the adjacent River Thames or surrounding public pathways.

Initial Assessment

Our technical team conducted a detailed site survey to analyze the porosity of the brickwork and the chemical composition of the multi-coloured aerosols. We concluded that a specialized, superheated steam treatment would be required to lift the varying pigments without damaging the substrate.

To overcome the limited access, our logistics team devised a remote-deployment strategy, utilizing extended hosing from a secure, self-contained mobile unit. A rigorous public safety and environmental containment plan was established to isolate the work zone and capture all wastewater, protecting the river ecosystem and ensuring continuous, safe pedestrian flow along the Thames path.

Our Approach

We utilized the industry-leading DOFF steam cleaning system combined with localized, eco-friendly chemical poultices. The DOFF system delivers superheated water at 150°C but at a very low pressure. This thermal shock gently breaks down the heavy aerosol resins, allowing the multi-coloured paint to be drawn out of the porous brick naturally.

This sympathetic architectural cleaning method ensures the structural integrity of the masonry is preserved. By employing sophisticated wet-vacuum recovery systems, we eliminated the risk of contaminated runoff, maintaining complete environmental compliance in a sensitive riverside zone.

The Removal Process

Step 1: Mobilise equipment using extended access protocols and establish a secure, environmentally contained work zone along the pedestrian pathway

Step 2: Apply specialized, masonry-safe treatments tailored to break down the varying pigments of the multi-coloured tags

Step 3: Deploy the DOFF superheated steam system to gently lift and extract the dissolved paint from deep within the porous brickwork

Step 4: Utilize wet-vacuum recovery to instantly capture all wastewater and prevent any runoff into the River Thames

Step 5: Conduct a final low-pressure rinse and quality inspection to guarantee a pristine finish with no ghosting or substrate damage

Results

The large, multi-coloured tags were completely eradicated. The DOFF system successfully restored the porous brickwork to its original condition without any pitting, scarring, or loss of structural integrity.

Despite the restricted access and sensitive riverside environment, the project was executed flawlessly. The local tourist and residential pathways remained open and safe, and full environmental compliance was maintained throughout the operation.

Before and After

Before: Several large, highly visible, multi-coloured graffiti tags penetrating porous residential brickwork along the River Thames
After: Fully restored, clean masonry with zero structural damage, ghosting, or environmental impact
