Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Islington

Project Overview

Glutes, Core, Pelvic Floor required professional graffiti removal after their commercial building on Old Street was vandalised with graffiti across exposed brick walls. The markings were clearly visible from the street and detracted from the professional appearance of the premises in a prominent and well trafficked area.

As a media company focused on women’s pelvic floor health, maintaining a clean, welcoming, and credible environment was essential. The client requested a careful restoration that respected the character of the brickwork while ensuring public safety throughout the works.

Location

  • Area: Old Street, London
  • Borough: London Borough of Islington
  • Property Type: Commercial
  • Client: Glutes, Core, Pelvic Floor
  • Date Completed: February 2025

The Challenge

The graffiti had been applied directly onto textured brickwork, which can absorb pigments deeply and is easily damaged by aggressive cleaning. Some of the affected areas were located above ground level, requiring working at height alongside a busy pavement.

The location experiences constant public footfall, meaning the work needed to be planned and executed with strict safety controls while avoiding prolonged obstruction to pedestrians or neighbouring businesses.

Initial Assessment

Our team carried out a detailed on site assessment to evaluate the type of brick, mortar condition, and depth of paint penetration. Test patches were completed to identify a method that would lift the graffiti effectively without bleaching, etching, or altering the surface texture.

Access planning formed a key part of the assessment, with consideration given to equipment placement, exclusion zones, and how elevated sections could be treated safely in a live street environment.

Our Approach

A brick specific graffiti removal system was selected, designed to draw pigments out of the masonry rather than driving them further into the surface. This approach allowed the brickwork to be cleaned gradually and evenly.

Working at height was managed using controlled access equipment, with safety barriers and clear signage in place to protect members of the public throughout the process.

The Removal Process

Step 1: Site setup, safety barriers, and preparation of access equipment

Step 2: Controlled application of graffiti removal treatments to lower brick areas

Step 3: Treatment of elevated sections using surface appropriate techniques

Step 4: Neutralisation, gentle rinsing, and final inspection of all brickwork

Results

The graffiti was successfully removed from the brick walls, restoring the building’s exterior to a clean and natural appearance. The brickwork retained its original colour and texture, with no visible shadowing or surface damage.

The project was completed efficiently while maintaining safe pedestrian access and minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

Before and After

Client Outcome

Glutes, Core, Pelvic Floor were able to present a professional and welcoming exterior consistent with their brand values. The careful restoration avoided the need for repainting or brick replacement and reduced the likelihood of uneven or patchy results.
