Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Lambeth
Table of Contents
Project Overview
Iceland, a major national supermarket chain, required urgent specialist intervention at their Brixton branch following a severe vandalism incident. The property’s first-floor, street-facing elevations had been targeted with excessive, large-scale graffiti.
Because the vandalism was situated high above the shopfront on a highly visible, bustling South West London high street, the client needed a fast, comprehensive restoration that would not disrupt trading hours or pose a risk to the general public below.
Location
- Area: Brixton, South West London
- Borough: London Borough of Lambeth
- Property Type: Commercial (Retail Supermarket)
- Client: Iceland
- Date Completed: March 2026
The Challenge
This project presented a complex set of logistical and environmental challenges. Firstly, the excessive graffiti was located entirely on the first floor, necessitating specialist working-at-height protocols directly above a densely populated, high-footfall pavement.
Secondly, the building suffered from existing guttering and drainage issues. Standard high-pressure washing would have risked localised flooding, water ingress, or improper runoff of wastewater into the public domain. The operation required strict environmental containment to ensure safe removal without exacerbating the site's drainage limitations.
Initial Assessment
Our rapid-response team conducted a thorough site survey to evaluate the masonry and identify the most effective removal agents for the excessive tagging.
Crucially, we mapped the compromised guttering and drainage systems. An access and environmental strategy was developed to safely position elevating equipment on the Brixton pavement while utilizing wastewater capture techniques to prevent any liquid from overwhelming the building's faulty drains.
Our Approach
We deployed a targeted, low-pressure, high-temperature steam cleaning system combined with surface-appropriate graffiti removal treatments. This approach allowed us to break down the heavy layers of aerosol paint without saturating the masonry or generating excess wastewater.
Working out of hours or behind strictly controlled pedestrian cordons, our IPAF-certified technicians accessed the first-floor facade safely, ensuring complete environmental compliance and zero disruption to the supermarket's daily footfall.
The Removal Process
Step 1: Secure the street-level work zone, establishing safe pedestrian bypasses and deploying mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs)
Step 2: Implement environmental controls and wastewater capture systems to bypass the building's compromised guttering
Step 3: Apply specialised, eco-friendly graffiti removal agents to break down the excessive paint on the first-floor masonry
Step 4: Utilised controlled, high-temperature steam cleaning to gently lift the pigment from the porous surface without damage
Step 5: Perform a final localised wash-down and site inspection, ensuring no ghosting or residue remained
Results
The excessive first-floor graffiti was completely eradicated, restoring the building's exterior to a pristine standard. By carefully managing the water output, our team bypassed the site's drainage issues entirely, ensuring a clean, dry, and safe environment upon completion.
The Brixton branch of Iceland remained fully operational throughout the process, with zero impact on customer access.
Before and After
Before: Extensive, highly visible graffiti sprawled across the first-floor exterior walls of the supermarket
After: Fully restored masonry, successfully cleaned at height with no environmental runoff issues

Client Outcome
The rapid removal of the high-level vandalism protected Iceland's brand reputation on one of South London's busiest commercial streets. Our ability to adapt to structural constraints, specifically the guttering issues, demonstrated our commitment to problem-solving, providing the client with peace of mind and a flawless finish.
