Graffiti Removal Project | London Borough of Lambeth

Project Overview

WeWork, a leading provider of premium co-working spaces, required urgent specialist assistance at their Waterloo, South Bank location following a targeted act of vandalism. One of their main street-facing windows on Waterloo Road had been defaced with a single, highly visible, and obscene acid etched tag.

Given the prestigious nature of the WeWork brand and the extreme footfall of Central London commuters and professionals passing the site daily, the client required an immediate, comprehensive restoration of the glass without the disruption and visual impact of boarding up the window for replacement.

Location

  • Area: Waterloo, Central London
  • Borough: London Borough of Lambeth
  • Property Type: Commercial (Co-working Office Space)
  • Client: WeWork
  • Date Completed: March 2026

The Challenge

The primary challenge was the combination of the damage type and the location. Acid etching eats directly into the glass surface, creating permanent chemical damage that cannot be simply washed away. The obscene nature of the tag made its immediate removal critical for the client's public image.

Logistically, Waterloo Road experiences extremely high pedestrian traffic throughout the day. The works had to be completed safely and efficiently, ensuring minimal disruption to the public, no obstruction of the pavement, and uninterrupted access for WeWork members entering and exiting the building.

Initial Assessment

Our specialist glass restoration team conducted an immediate on-site assessment to measure the exact depth of the chemical burn. Because the single large tag was sprawled across a prominent pane of glass, our strategy focused on resurfacing the affected area while seamlessly blending the finish to prevent any optical distortion.

A rigorous health and safety plan was implemented to manage the immediate work area. We established a compact, secure footprint on the pavement that allowed the restoration to proceed without forcing pedestrians into the road.

Our Approach

We deployed our multi-stage glass polishing and restoration programme. This highly specialized process involves mechanically "shaving" the glass down to the depth of the acid etch using controlled abrasives, followed by refining the surface back to its original clarity.

This approach was the only viable solution to remove the obscenity instantly while avoiding the massive capital expenditure, long lead times, and operational disruption of replacing a large commercial window pane.

The Removal Process

Step 1: Secure the work zone on Waterloo Road, implementing pedestrian safety controls to maintain public access

Step 2: Clean the glass surface to fully expose the severity and boundaries of the acid etched tag

Step 3: Perform graded abrasive grinding to physically remove the chemically damaged layers of glass

Step 4: Execute fine-stage precision polishing to restore 100% optical transparency and prevent visual "lensing"

Step 5: Final hydrophobic treatment and rigorous quality inspection to ensure a pristine, distortion-free finish

Results

The obscene acid etched tag was completely eradicated, and the structural integrity of the window was fully preserved. The glass was restored to a flawless, "like-new" condition with absolute clarity.

Despite the extreme footfall of the Central London location, the project was executed swiftly and discreetly, causing zero disruption to the general public or the daily operations of the WeWork space.
