Heritage Professional Invisible Wood Grain Filler Kit (French Method)
£29.99
Open pored woods like oak and walnut have that beautiful, rippling grain you can see across a room, but up close you can feel every tiny trench under your fingertips. Varnish sits on top, polish sinks in, yet the surface never quite becomes that glass smooth plane you see on true antique work. The Heritage Professional Invisible Wood Grain Filler Kit is your way of closing those pores the traditional way, so the grain looks deep but feels perfectly level.
The Invisible French Method
Instead of plastic fillers or heavy slurries that smother the wood, this kit uses fine pumice and the wood’s own dust to fill the grain from within. Worked with oil and felt, the pores slowly disappear while the figure, colour and character stay completely honest. You are not covering the timber, you are completing it.
For Heirlooms And High Standards
Ideal for oak, walnut and other open pored hardwoods destined for French polish or high gloss varnish, this is a patient, civilised process for people who care how a tabletop feels as much as how it looks. Clear steps, quiet satisfaction, a finish that would not embarrass a cabinet maker.
Open pored hardwoods like oak and walnut have beautiful grain but naturally uneven surfaces. Traditional French polishers solved this by using the wood’s own dust to fill and level the pores, creating a flawless, glass smooth foundation for French polishing or varnishing. The Heritage Professional Wood Grain Filler Kit recreates that classic technique in a complete, easy to use system designed for both professionals and dedicated enthusiasts.
Instead of modern synthetic fillers that sit on top of the wood, this dual stage system builds the surface from within. The pumice powders cut gently into the grain, mix with the natural wood dust and create a pore filling slurry that becomes part of the timber itself. The result is invisible, authentic and perfectly suited for high grade finishing work.
Kit Concept
This is a two stage French method grain filling system. Step One builds the slurry that fills pores. Step Two refines and perfects the surface. Together they produce a beautifully level, matte smooth finish ready for shellac, varnish or wax.
Kit Contents
-
1 x 100g Tin of Step 1: High Build Filler
2F pumice powder (~240 mesh). Provides the initial cutting action needed to mix wood dust with oil and fill deep pores. -
1 x 100g Tin of Step 2: Satin Smoother
3F pumice powder (~300 mesh). Refines the micro scratches from Step One and leaves a silky, even matte surface ready for polishing. -
1 x 100ml Bottle of Grain Filling Oil
High purity boiled linseed oil. Slows the process for greater control and replaces the flammable alcohol based method.
Safety Note: Oily rags can self combust. Wash with warm soapy water before disposal. -
1 x Pounce Bag Applicator
Muslin drawstring bag for dusting the pumice evenly across the surface. Prevents clumping and gives a true professional finish. -
1 x Felt Rubbing Block
Traditional dense wool felt block for smooth, consistent rubbing during both grain filling stages.

How it works
-
Stage One – High Build Filling
Dust the surface using the pounce bag. Apply a few drops of Grain Filling Oil. Use the felt block in circular or figure eight motions to build the wood dust and pumice slurry that fills the pores. -
Stage Two – Satin Smoothing
Once the first stage dries slightly, dust the surface with the finer 3F pumice. Work gently with the felt block to refine scratches and achieve a perfectly smooth matte surface. -
Clean and Prepare for Finish
Wipe away residue with a clean cloth and allow the oil to settle fully before applying shellac, varnish or wax.
